NATIONAL CANNABIS ROUNDTABLE APPLAUDS PRESIDENT BIDEN’S HISTORIC ACTION ON CANNABIS REFORM
Washington, D.C. – Today, President Biden announced a pardon to all people convicted of simple possession of marijuana under federal law. Additionally, President Biden urged all governors to take similar actions on the state level, and asked the Secretary of Health and Human Services and Attorney General to initiate the administrative process to review how cannabis is scheduled under federal law.
Saphira Galoob, Executive Director of the National Cannabis Roundtable, released the following statement:
“President Biden’s announcement today is a historic moment for cannabis reform. For far too long, hundreds of thousands of Americans have suffered the collateral consequences of federal prohibition, facing time in prison and subsequent barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities. This extraordinary action will be nothing short of life-changing for these individuals and their families. It is a momentous step toward making our country more just and more equitable.
“The National Cannabis Roundtable and our members stand with President Biden in encouraging governors to take similar steps at the state level. We agree with the President that no human being deserves to be in jail due to simple cannabis possession – not at the federal level and not at the state level.
“For years, the National Cannabis Roundtable and our members have been committed to cannabis reforms that right past wrongs, advance social equity, and expand opportunities in the cannabis industry. President Biden’s announcement today does just that. We look forward to the scheduling review process being conducted by the Attorney General and Secretary of Health and Human Services, and we again thank President Biden for this historic step towards federal cannabis reform.”
